WASHINGTON - Federal immigration legislation is all but dead until after the 2008 elections. But the political battles that helped bring a sweeping reform bill down are sure to rage on.

The House will almost certainly dodge the issue now, with leaders hoping to spare members there the fractious debate that dragged on for almost three weeks in the Senate before the bill finally collapsed.
"Immigration is going to have to wait until we get a new president and a new Congress," said Harry Reid, D-Nev., Senate majority leader.
